Night movement and orientation in the district of Saint-Maurice

DomusHelp helps organize practical support to make night movement clearer, simpler and safer at home in the district of Saint-Maurice and Lower Valais. This subcategory concerns everyday night-time movements: going from the bed to the toilet, reaching the kitchen, finding a switch, finding a telephone, moving through a hallway, crossing a threshold, finding one’s bearings in a bedroom, avoiding a rug, going around a piece of furniture, using a walking aid or reaching a door without becoming disoriented. The help may consist of identifying the main night route, clearing a passage, bringing a lamp closer, placing a simple night light, making a switch more visible, organizing non-intrusive orientation markers, removing an obvious obstacle, checking the visible stability of a rug, bringing useful objects closer to the bed or preparing a clear request for a competent professional. The intervention must remain simple, non-medical, non-therapeutic, non-urgent and non-structural, without diagnosing falls, vision, sleep or cognition, without complex electrical installation, without major modification of the home, without imposed monitoring device, without restricting movement, without promising to avoid every fall, confusion, wandering, pain, malaise or loss of autonomy, and without replacing a doctor, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a CMS or SMZ, an electrician, an installer, a trusted person or an emergency service.

What this help covers

This help may concern simple interior adjustments linked to night routes: clearing the passage between the bed and the toilet, removing an obstacle from the floor, bringing a bedside lamp closer, checking that a night light works, making a switch easier to find, placing a simple visual marker, removing a slippery rug from the main route, bringing glasses, telephone, bell, water or walking aid closer, clarifying access to a door, making a threshold visually safer, or organizing a small light point without modifying the electrical installation. The aim is to reduce practical confusion, unnecessary obstacles and poorly prepared movements, while respecting the person’s habits. DomusHelp can also help identify situations that go beyond a simple adjustment: recent fall, pain, dizziness, reduced vision, frequent night waking, disorientation, cognitive disorders, fear of standing up, drowsiness, medication treatment, unstable walking, need for a technical aid, night wandering, inability to reach the toilet, or need for an assessment by a healthcare professional.

DomusHelp does not replace a doctor, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a nurse, a CMS or SMZ, an electrician, an installer, a lighting specialist, a family caregiver, a social service, a property management company, an owner or an emergency service. Night-time movements may reveal a significant risk: fall, balance disorder, confusion, reduced vision, medication side effect, malaise, pain, fatigue, disorientation, need for an assistive device or need for human presence. In case of a fall, pain after a fall, loss of consciousness, sudden confusion, malaise, respiratory distress, weakness on one side of the body, person not found in the home, dangerous wandering, inability to get up, injury, bleeding or immediate danger, an emergency service, a healthcare professional, a trusted person or the competent service must be contacted without delay. DomusHelp does not medically validate night-time autonomy, does not prescribe technical aids, does not install medical monitoring systems, does not carry out electrical work, does not lock a person in a room and does not guarantee that a marker or night light will prevent every fall, fear, confusion or loss of autonomy.

Preferred providers

Insured interior safety service

Suitable for simple tasks: clearing a night route, bringing a lamp closer, placing a non-fixed night light, removing an obstacle, repositioning a small piece of furniture, organizing useful objects near the bed, checking a visible passage or reporting an obvious risk, without electrical work, without transferring a person and without major modification of the home.

Occupational therapist, healthcare professional or CMS / SMZ

Suitable when the person falls, is afraid to stand up, becomes disoriented, has difficulty walking, has reduced vision, uses a walking aid, takes medication that may affect alertness, has cognitive disorders or needs an assessment of fall risk, night-time autonomy, need for a technical aid or a safer organization of the home.

Electrician, installer or lighting specialist

Suitable when a switch, socket, fixed lighting, motion detector, light marking, connected system or any element requiring technical competence, electrical safety, authorization, insurance and clear responsibility must be added, moved or modified.

Before the intervention

  • Identify the main night route: bed, toilet, bathroom, kitchen, entrance, hallway, stairs, balcony or telephone.
  • Ask the person what is difficult at night: seeing, standing up, finding the switch, finding bearings, walking, opening a door or calling for help.
  • Observe visible obstacles: rug, cable, low furniture, basket, shoes, animal, threshold, half-open door, step or object on the floor.
  • Check that useful objects remain reachable from the bed: glasses, telephone, lamp, water, bell, cane, walker or remote control.
  • Avoid abruptly moving the usual markers of an older, anxious, visually impaired, confused or cognitively impaired person.
  • Prefer simple, reversible and understandable solutions: clearing, bringing closer, lighting gently, marking, visually stabilizing or organizing.
  • Check that lighting does not create glare, misleading shadows, cables on the floor or sleep disturbance.
  • Check sensitive areas: getting out of bed, toilet, bathroom, hallway, threshold, stairs, rug, switch and entrance door.
  • Do not install any fixed electrical device, sensor, camera, alarm or connected system without a competent professional and clear agreement.
  • Do not use any solution that limits freedom of movement, blocks a door or prevents the person from leaving a room.
  • Ask for clear agreement before moving a lamp, piece of furniture, rug, bedside table, walking aid or personal object.
  • Take possible costs into account: night light, bulb, secured extension cord, travel, small equipment, professional installation or second visit.
  • Keep a simple record: route observed, obstacles removed, markers added, risk reported, limit identified and professional to contact if necessary.
  • Stop or refuse the intervention in case of recent fall, significant confusion, dangerous wandering, electrical risk, defective lighting, dangerous stairs or doubt about safety.
