What this help covers

This help may concern organizing grooming at home or with a provider, clarifying the type of animal concerned, preparing a calm space, brushing a cat, rabbit, guinea pig or another small domestic pet when the provider has suitable experience, very light removal of small, non-painful knots, maintaining a coat that tangles easily, checking the instructions given by the person responsible for the animal and preparing a referral if grooming reveals a health problem, pain, intense fear or risk of injury. The aim is to support animal wellbeing and make routine care easier, without confusing grooming with veterinary care, without excessive restraint, without unsuitable products and without seeking an aesthetic result at the expense of the animal’s safety or stress level.

Before the intervention

• Identify the animal precisely: cat, rabbit, guinea pig, ferret or another small domestic pet, taking into account its species and specific needs.
• Clarify the agreement of the person responsible for the animal, the instructions given, the accepted limits and the expected result without imposing an unwanted change.
• Describe the real objective: brushing, light detangling, coat maintenance, nail trimming by a qualified professional, superficial cleaning or specialized grooming appointment.
• Ask whether the animal has a history of biting, scratching, panic, escape, aggression, illness, recent surgery, veterinary treatment or strong reaction to grooming.
• Identify signs that require slowing down or stopping: panting, trembling, freezing, crying, hissing, escape attempt, biting, claws out, difficult breathing or marked stress.
• Check that there is no wound, bleeding, scab, painful area, lump, visible parasite, sudden hair loss, skin irritation or unusual smell.
• Plan a calm, closed, well-lit space with no other animal, no young child nearby, a non-slip floor and the possibility for the animal to retreat.
• Ask that the equipment be clean, adapted to the species, without aggressive products, strong fragrance, essential oils, human shampoo or non-prescribed insecticide.
• Plan breaks, a short duration and gentle handling, without excessive restraint, without suspending the animal and without painful immobilization.
• Check whether transport is necessary and, if so, plan a suitable, clean, secure carrier that is as familiar to the animal as possible.
• Clarify the price, duration, travel costs, provider’s level of experience, insurance, cancellation conditions and the possibility of stopping the service if the animal suffers or panics.
• Refuse or redirect the request if the animal seems sick, very stressed, injured, too matted, dangerous to handle or if the responsible person’s instructions are unclear or contradictory.

• Diagnosis, treatment or veterinary procedure concerning the animal’s skin, coat, ears, teeth, nails, eyes, parasites, pain or general condition.
• Sedation, tranquilization, forced restraint, painful immobilization, imposed muzzle without an appropriate framework or handling an animal in panic.
• Grooming an injured, sick, feverish, very old, pregnant or recently operated animal, or an animal showing unusual behaviour, without veterinary advice.
• Painful detangling, shaving severely matted fur, cutting close to the skin, removing major mats or any intervention that could injure the animal.
• Treatment of fleas, ticks, lice, mites, ringworm, mange, infections, wounds, scabs, allergies or irritations requiring veterinary advice.
• Cutting ingrown, very long or dangerous nails, beak, teeth, deep ear cleaning, glands, eyes or any area requiring veterinary competence.
• Forced bathing, use of products not adapted to the species, human shampoo, perfume, essential oil, non-prescribed antiparasitic spray or irritating product.
• Handling wild, protected, unfamiliar exotic, dangerous or unidentified animals, or animals whose keeping and needs are not clearly established.
• Extended pet sitting, unsafe transport, intervention without a reachable responsible person or making veterinary decisions instead of the animal’s guardian.
• Promising a guaranteed aesthetic result, total removal of stress, resolution of a behavioural issue or replacement of veterinary or behavioural follow-up.
• Taking photos, videos or sharing information about the home, the person or the animal without clear consent and an appropriate framework.
