The aim is to reduce a concrete inconvenience without dismantling a complex element, without working on a sensitive installation, without carrying a heavy load and without giving a false impression of safety when the object, support, fixing or responsibility for the place requires a qualified intervention.

Before the intervention

• Identify the element concerned precisely: drawer, cupboard door, handle, furniture foot, shelf, stop, accessory, small support or simple household element.
• Describe the concrete problem: it sticks, rubs, moves, leans, closes poorly, creaks, loosens, becomes misaligned or obstructs the passage.
• Check whether the element is private, rented, shared, fixed to the building, under warranty or subject to agreement from a property manager, owner or manufacturer.
• Observe weight, stability, height, condition of screws, hinges, pads, rails, stops or visible parts, without dismantling a complex system.
• Check that there is no link with electricity, water, gas, heating, ventilation, a security lock, technical appliance or built-in installation.
• Check that the intervention can be done with simple actions, common tools, no risky drilling, no cutting, no ladder, no dangerous carrying and no irreversible modification.
• Avoid any action that could weaken a fixing, hide a defect, block an exit, hinder access for a caregiver, move the risk elsewhere or worsen wear.
• Take real use into account: older person, reduced mobility, reduced vision, child, pet, frequent passage, furniture used every day or access needed in an emergency.
• Keep any small parts removed or moved, note what has been adjusted and avoid throwing away a screw, cover, pad or part without clear agreement.
• Test the element gently after adjustment with the person if possible, without forcing it, without promising total safety and without continuing the intervention if the problem goes beyond a simple adjustment.
• Document the situation if useful with a description, before/after photo or note for the craftsperson, property manager, owner or after-sales service.
• In case of doubt about safety, authorization, stability, required skill or responsibility for the place, stop the simple request and refer it to the competent service.

• Promising compliance, durability, total safety or replacement of craft expertise when the adjustment presents a risk.
