Local needs questionnaire — Brig 3.9 — ENGLISH (#6)

Before taking action

Six useful checks

These checks reduce the risk of a fall, damage or a decision being made against the person’s wishes.

Ask for the person’s clear agreement and respect their right not to change anything.

Check that the balcony door, threshold and passage remain clear and dry.

Move only an object that is very light, stable, accessible and clearly authorised.

Never stand on a chair, step stool or ladder, and never lean beyond the guardrail.

Do not fix, drill, connect or modify anything without a competent professional and any required permission.

Stop immediately if there is any doubt about weight, height, electricity, water, a hazardous plant or the person’s safety.

Safety framework

Limits, consent and responsibilities

The essential rules remain visible. Further details are grouped below so that the page does not become a contract.

Small tasks that may be possible
  • Observe only what is visible and accessible.
  • Water lightly using the equipment already present.
  • Empty a small accessible saucer.
  • Move a very light, stable and authorised object.
  • Prepare a clear request for a relative or professional.
Situations requiring a professional
  • A heavy pot, hanging planter, work at height or proximity to a drop.
  • Significant repotting, pruning, a sick plant, infestation or a treatment product.
  • Fixing, drilling, guardrail, façade, shared area, water or electricity.
  • A permanent alteration, technical watering system or building-related responsibility.
Consent, tenancy and privacy
  • Do not discard, move or photograph anything against the person’s wishes.
  • Obtain approval from the property management company or owner before any permanent change.
  • Do not share a photograph, access code, document or personal data without explicit consent.
  • DomusHelp does not sign quotations, make financial commitments or certify the safety of a balcony.

Direct answers

Frequently asked questions

A child or adult has chewed or swallowed part of a plant: what should I do?

Remove visible remains from the mouth and keep the plant, its label or a photograph to help identify it. Do not induce vomiting and do not give activated charcoal or medication without professional advice.

Call Tox Info Suisse on 145, even if the amount seems small or the plant is unknown. If possible, state the name of the plant, the part chewed or swallowed, the approximate amount, the time and any symptoms observed.

If the person is unconscious, is having difficulty breathing or is seriously unwell, call 144 immediately.

A dog, cat or other animal has eaten a plant: what should I do?

Move the animal away from the plant and keep a sample, the label or a photograph. Note the time, the approximate amount and any symptoms.

Do not induce vomiting or give any home remedy without professional instructions. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary service promptly, especially if the plant is unknown, a significant amount was eaten, or the animal is vomiting, appears weak, is trembling or is behaving unusually.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear when a potentially toxic plant has been eaten. For an animal, contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary service first; general information from Tox Info Suisse does not replace veterinary care.

May a pot be moved to clear the passage?

Only if it is very light, stable, accessible, away from the edge of the balcony and the person concerned agrees. Do not move a heavy, hanging, cracked or unstable pot, or one placed at height or close to a drop: ask a properly equipped professional for help.

Who should I contact to repot or care for a sick plant?

For repotting, pruning, a sick or infested plant, or a treatment, contact a gardener, horticulturist or garden centre that offers this service. For a heavy pot, a fixing, an irrigation system or an outdoor alteration, choose a landscaper or technical outdoor service.

Email DomusHelp to prepare the request →

Can a planter be fixed to the guardrail?

Before any fixing, obtain approval from the property management company or owner and check the building or condominium regulations. A poorly secured planter can fall, damage the guardrail or endanger people; installation should be entrusted to a competent professional.

My parent lives alone in Brig and no longer looks after the balcony: where should we start?

Start by asking what they want to keep, what they do not want changed and who is allowed to enter their home. Do not discard or move a plant against their wishes.

  • For a small accessible task: a relative, trusted neighbour or light practical support service.
  • For plants: a gardener or horticulturist.
  • For a heavy pot, a fixing or a fall risk: a properly equipped professional, the property management company or the owner.
  • If fatigue or mobility is affecting everyday life more broadly: Pro Senectute for social advice and guidance, or SMZ/Spitex when a need for home support or care should be assessed.

Email DomusHelp to clarify the request →

I am going into hospital: who can water my plants?

You can ask a relative, a trusted neighbour, a practical support service or a gardener who offers occasional visits.

Before leaving, note the dates, watering frequency, plants concerned, any special instructions, key arrangements and the person to contact if there is a problem. Also confirm the price, visiting times and return of the keys.

A heavy pot, a plant at height or a technical irrigation installation should be handled by a properly equipped person.

Email DomusHelp to prepare a request →

How much does an intervention for plants or a balcony cost?

There is no single price. The amount depends in particular on travel, the minimum charge, the time required, the number and weight of the pots, the frequency of visits, equipment, green-waste disposal and whether the request is one-off or regular.

Before agreeing, ask for a total price or quotation stating the hourly or fixed rate, travel costs, minimum charge, equipment, disposal, VAT where applicable and cancellation terms. DomusHelp does not set company rates and does not present an estimate as a confirmed quotation.

Where can I find the rules for green waste in Brig-Glis?

The municipality publishes the current calendar and rules. Select Local and official resources to go directly to the “Green waste — Brig-Glis” card, then select “View the municipal calendar”.

Can Asian tiger mosquitoes lay eggs in plant-pot saucers, and should the water be emptied?

Yes. The Asian tiger mosquito uses very small artificial accumulations of water, including plant-pot saucers, watering cans, buckets, folded covers and blocked gutters.

  • Empty containers after rain or watering and do not leave standing water.
  • If a saucer must remain under a pot, add sand so that no free water remains on the surface.
  • Turn over or store unused containers and close water butts that cannot be emptied.
  • Avoid non-targeted products that also kill beneficial insects.

These measures reduce breeding sites and nuisance on the balcony.
