The intervention must remain proportionate, respectful and adapted to the person’s habits, without diagnosis, without prescribing a technical aid, without transforming the home, without drilling, without wall fixing, without electrical modification, without intervention on plumbing, heating, gas or ventilation, without moving heavy furniture, without installing a fixed grab bar, without modifying a medical bed, medical armchair or specialized device, without deciding in place of the person, without restricting freedom, without promising to prevent falls and without replacing a doctor, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a nurse, a CMS or SMZ, a qualified craftsperson, a property management company, an owner, a specialized supplier, a responsible relative or an emergency service when safety, mobility, health, the home or responsibility requires professional assessment.

What this help covers

This help may concern a clearly limited light adaptation: bringing the phone, glasses, water, a lamp or a remote control closer, making a passage clearer, organizing a rest corner, repositioning a small table, making an everyday object more visible, grouping useful belongings near the bed, clarifying a kitchen area, making a low shelf more practical, preparing a light basket, moving a small object that gets in the way, improving access to an existing switch, organizing storage without emptying it completely, or preparing a request to a provider when the need goes beyond a simple adjustment. The aim is to improve the everyday use of the home without modifying the structure, without imposing a new organization, without removing the person’s landmarks and without creating false safety. CMS/SMZ, occupational therapist or healthcare professional

Suitable when the adaptation concerns a fragile, elderly, recently hospitalized person, with loss of autonomy, pain, confusion, fall risk, using a walking aid, having difficulty standing up, moving around, reaching the toilet or organizing everyday life without specialized help.

Craftsperson, technical aids supplier, property management company or owner

Suitable when an adaptation requires specialized equipment, fixing, technical adjustment, modification of furniture, rental authorization, validation by the property management company, insurance responsibility, intervention on a heavy element or clearly defined professional competence.

Before the intervention

  • Identify precisely the area concerned: bedroom, living room, entrance, kitchen, bathroom, hallway, rest corner, storage or administrative space.
  • Ask the person what actually bothers them: object too far away, cluttered passage, difficulty reaching a lamp, fatigue, fear of falling or impractical organization.
  • Obtain clear agreement from the person concerned before moving any object, taking a photo, changing a habit, transmitting information or contacting a third party.
  • Respect existing landmarks: avoid changes that are too rapid, imposed, infantilizing or difficult to understand.
  • Start with one small area only in order to avoid fatigue, confusion, loss of landmarks or the feeling of being invaded.
  • Check that useful objects remain accessible without blocking the passage: phone, glasses, water, lamp, remote control, bell, keys or already planned walking aid.
  • Identify visible obstacles: rugs, cables, small furniture, bags, baskets, objects on the floor, light table, unstable chair or passage that is too narrow.
  • Limit the intervention to simple and reversible actions: clearing, bringing closer, placing better, making visible, grouping, reporting or preparing a request.
  • Never improvise a support with a chair, light table, door, radiator, shelf or piece of furniture not designed to support a person’s weight.
  • Do not move alone a bed, wardrobe, sofa, heavy table, massive armchair or any element that may injure someone or damage the home.
  • Do not modify electricity, plumbing, heating, gas, ventilation, locks, fixed grab bars or technical installations.
  • Check whether the home is rented and whether the property management company or owner must be informed before a more durable adaptation.
  • Plan a sober update: area observed, object moved, passage cleared, limit identified, risk reported or professional to contact.
  • Stop the intervention and refer to a professional in case of fall, pain, confusion, transfer difficulty, electrical risk, unstable furniture, conflict or doubt about consent.

  • Installation of a camera, intrusive monitoring, disputed sensor, locking, exit restriction or device limiting the person’s freedom.
  • Management of a family conflict, decision in place of the person, arbitration between relatives or installation of a disputed adaptation.
  • Promise that the person will not fall, will not be injured, will not become disoriented or will not need medical or social help.
  • Replacement of an emergency service, healthcare professional, CMS/SMZ, occupational therapist, qualified craftsperson, property management company, owner or specialized supplier.
