The intervention must remain simple, respectful, non-intrusive, proportionate and adapted to the person’s habits, without diagnosis, without prescribing a technical aid, without mobilizing the person, without transfer, without carrying, without installing a fixed grab bar, without wall fixing, without transforming the home, without modifying a medical armchair, without promising to prevent falls, without deciding in place of the person and without replacing a doctor, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a nurse, a CMS or SMZ, a specialized supplier, a responsible relative, a property management company, an owner or a qualified professional when safety, mobility, pain, posture, loss of autonomy or fall risk requires a specialized assessment.

What this help covers

This help may concern a clearly limited comfort adjustment: placing a chair used every day in a better position, clearing the space around an armchair, bringing a bedside table closer, avoiding a phone or glasses being placed too far away, putting an already present non-medical cushion back in place, checking that a stool does not block the passage, organizing a reading corner or dining corner more practically, making a glass of water, a lamp or a remote control more accessible, reporting an unstable seat, distinguishing a reassuring small support from a dangerous support, or preparing a request to a professional when the seat or support seems unsuitable. The aim is to improve comfort and clarity in the home without transforming the space, without imposing change, without prescribing equipment, without medically assessing posture, without deciding whether a person can stand up alone and without creating false safety. Suitable when a seat must be replaced, an armchair checked, adapted equipment chosen, furniture repaired, a fixed support installed, a height adjusted, a heavy element handled, a modification in a rented home validated or a situation addressed that requires technical competence, insurance, authorization or clearly defined responsibility.

Before the intervention

  • Identify precisely the area concerned: chair, armchair, edge of bed, dining corner, rest corner, small table, armrest, stool, passage or useful object within reach.
  • Ask the person what actually bothers them: seat too low, object too far away, difficulty standing up, fear of falling, cluttered passage or lack of comfort.
  • Obtain clear agreement from the person concerned before moving any object, changing a habit, taking a photo, transmitting information or suggesting an adjustment.
  • Respect the person’s dignity: avoid infantilizing, imposed or unnecessarily visible solutions, or solutions that give the impression that they are losing control of their space.
  • Check whether the person lives alone, falls easily, tires quickly, uses a walking aid, was recently hospitalized or cannot easily call for help.
  • Observe only visible elements: apparent stability of the seat, passage around the seat, objects on the floor, rugs, cables, light table, armrests or improvised support.
  • Limit the intervention to simple and reversible actions: clearing, moving slightly, bringing closer, making visible, reporting or preparing a request to a professional.
  • Never improvise a support with a chair, light table, shelf, door, radiator, unstable piece of furniture or object not designed to support a person’s weight.
  • Do not lift, carry, pull, transfer or physically help a person stand up if the safety of the action is not clearly supervised by a competent professional.
