In case of wound, pain, limping, red skin, unusual hair loss, parasites, strong smell, discharge, sudden aggression, breathing difficulty, very old animal, sick animal, mats tight against the skin, need for sedation or inability to handle the animal without major stress, the request must be referred to a veterinarian or specialized professional. Grooming must never be carried out if the animal panics, suffers, struggles strongly or may injure someone.

Before the intervention

  • Identify the animal concerned: cat, rabbit, guinea pig or another non-dangerous small domestic animal.
  • Ask about age, health, handling habits, reactions to brushing and any previous bite or scratch incidents.
  • Check that the owner or responsible person gives clear consent for the requested service.
  • Plan a calm, closed place with no dangerous escape route, no excessive noise and the necessary equipment within reach.
  • Prepare an appropriate brush, towel, treat if allowed, carrier, floor protection and a way to stop the service quickly.
  • Avoid any bath, scented product, spray, clipper, nail trimming or tight detangling if the provider is not qualified.
  • Watch for stress signals: fast breathing, flattened ears, agitated tail, growling, biting, scratching, freezing or trying to escape.
  • Stop immediately if the animal shows pain, panic, unusual aggression or excessive fatigue.

  • Handling exotic animals, reptiles, birds, venomous animals, wild animals or species requiring specialized competence.
  • Emergency veterinary transport, medical decision-making, administering medication or changing a treatment.
  • Promising an aesthetic result, calm behaviour, complete removal of mats or total absence of stress.
