What this help covers

This help may consist of organizing an appointment with a suitable provider, preparing a clean and well-lit space, setting up a stable chair, bringing a table, a towel, water if needed, cotton, a gentle file, a suitable nail clipper, a simple cream, ordinary nail polish remover or nail polish chosen by the person. It can also help check that the person understands what will be done, that they accept the care, that they can ask for a pause, that they remain comfortable, that their personal objects are respected and that the products used do not create excessive smell or discomfort. The setup must remain gentle, non-invasive, reversible and limited to a simple aesthetic manicure. It can also help distinguish an ordinary wellbeing service from a medical, dermatological, nursing or specialized need when the hands, nails or skin show a concerning sign.

Preferred providers

Before the intervention

• Obtain the person’s clear agreement and check that they truly want a manicure, without pressure related to their appearance, a visit, an outing or the opinion of a close person.
• Understand their preferences: nail length, desired shape, colour or no polish, pace of the care, need for pauses, sensitivity to smells or touch.
• Observe only what is necessary for the safety of the care: redness, pain, swelling, wound, crack, bleeding, detached nail, unusual change or skin reaction.
• Ask tactfully whether relevant health information should be shared with the provider, for example known allergy, very fragile skin, diabetes, anticoagulant treatment or immunosuppression.
• Provide a clean, calm, well-lit space with a stable chair, accessible table, towel, surface protection and suitable waste bin.
• Check that the instruments are clean, suitable, not shared without disinfection and that single-use files or consumables are handled hygienically.
• Avoid aggressive products, strong smells, powerful removers, unknown lamps or devices when the person is fragile, sensitive or worried.
• Keep the telephone, glasses, hearing aids, water, means of calling for help, personal medication and important objects accessible to the person.
• Do not block passages, do not place the person in a tiring position and do not prolong the care if they show pain, irritation or tiredness.
• Plan a clean end to the intervention: products closed, waste removed, surface wiped, documents or personal belongings put back in place and the person left in a comfortable position.

• Body hygiene care, washing, intimate assistance, nursing care, physical mobilization or care tasks requiring health-social competence.
• Handling money, jewellery, valuable objects, private documents or personal products without explicit agreement and a clear framework.
• Photographing hands, publishing images, before-and-after comparison or commercial use of the person’s appearance without explicit consent.
• Promising that a manicure at home alone will solve psychological suffering, loss of independence, neglect, a skin condition or a relationship problem.
