What this help covers

This help may consist of identifying poorly lit areas, understanding important routes, placing an already suitable solar or rechargeable outdoor light closer, replacing a battery in a simple lamp, orienting a small light without glare, checking an already installed motion detector when the setting is accessible, replacing an accessible outdoor bulb if the light fitting is intact, dry and intended for user replacement, or reporting that an existing light no longer works. It can also help choose the most logical place for a non-fixed light, test visibility from the door, steps or path, avoid cables on the ground, keep emergency access clear and distinguish a simple adjustment from a need for an electrician, fixing, works, authorization, technical repair or condominium decision.

Before the intervention

• Obtain the person’s clear agreement and identify the routes to make safer: door, step, mailbox, parking area, garage, cellar, terrace, balcony or outdoor path.
• Check whether the space is private, rented, shared, part of a condominium, managed by a property manager or subject to neighbourhood, facade or co-ownership rules.
• Observe dark areas without minimizing risks: poorly visible step, threshold, uneven ground, slope, gravel, ice, snow, outdoor mat, cable or obstacle.
• Prefer simple, reversible solutions suitable for outdoor use: solar lamp, rechargeable lamp, stable portable lighting or an element intended for outdoor use.
• Avoid cables on the ground, improvised extension leads, multi-socket outlets outside, non-weatherproof lamps, connections exposed to rain or objects creating a new fall risk.
• Do not stand on a chair, edge, unstable ladder or slippery surface to reach a light fitting.
• Direct the light toward the ground or useful passage, without dazzling the person, neighbours, drivers, windows or other people’s private areas.
• Check that the light does not block a door, ramp, exit, mailbox, emergency passage or walker access.
• If possible, test the lighting in real conditions, at dusk or in a darkened area, and ask the person whether the result is understandable and comfortable.
• Stop the intervention if an electrical element appears wet, cracked, broken, hot, unstable, live, difficult to reach or linked to a fixed installation.

• Works on floors, steps, ramps, thresholds, coverings, drainage, snow clearing, salting, masonry or structural securing of the access.
• Promising that outdoor lighting alone will prevent falls, intrusions, accidents, emergencies, isolation or loss of independence.
