What this help covers

This help may concern organizing simple coat care at home: choosing a suitable local provider, preparing a stable area that is easy to clean, checking the animal’s habits, using an appropriate brush or comb, gently detangling accessible areas, giving a bath only if the animal tolerates it and the environment is safe, drying without excessive heat, gathering hair, cleaning simple splashes and reporting a problem that goes beyond aesthetics. The provider must be able to interrupt the service if the animal shows signs of fear, pain, exhaustion, aggression, respiratory distress or clear refusal. For cats and small animals, bathing must remain exceptional and reserved for a genuinely suitable situation with a competent person, because stress, cooling, restraint and drying can quickly become problematic.

Preferred providers

Before the intervention

• Check with the person responsible for the animal what is expected: brushing, bath, light detangling, duration, limits and areas not to touch.
• Identify the species, age, size, temperament, grooming habits, past reactions and possible fragilities of the animal.
• Observe the coat condition before wetting the animal: tight knots, patches, redness, scabs, parasites, wounds, pain or unusual smell.
• Use only products suitable for animals, avoiding human shampoos, irritating scented products, solvents or products whose tolerance is not clear.
• Prepare a stable, warm, non-slip, ventilated, accessible space, without cold draughts and easy to clean after the service.
• Keep electrical appliances, extension leads, hair dryers, sockets and cables away from water and from the animal’s routes.
• Handle the animal gently, without brutal restraint, without an improvised muzzle and without prolonged holding that increases fear or pain.
• For a cat or a small animal, avoid bathing unless the situation is clearly suitable, the animal is used to it and the provider is competent.
• Dry gradually, without excessive heat, without unnecessary noise and without leaving the animal damp, chilled or enclosed in an uncomfortable space.
• Plan pauses and stop if the animal trembles, pants, freezes, tries to escape, growls, bites, scratches, cries or shows persistent refusal.
• Clarify cleaning after the service: hair, towels, splashes, access to the bathroom, waste disposal and tidying the equipment.
• Limit any photo, video or information about the animal and the home to what is strictly necessary, with clear agreement from the responsible person.
• Refuse the intervention if hygiene, safety, competence, consent of the responsible person or animal welfare are not clear.

• Diagnosis, treatment or follow-up of a skin disease, infection, allergy, wound, parasite, pain or veterinary problem.
• Sedation, strong restraint, forced immobilization, improvised muzzle or handling of a panicked, aggressive or painful animal.
• Deep detangling of knots stuck to the skin, clipping, scissor cutting close to the skin or removing matted clumps without a qualified groomer.
• Bathing an animal that is sick, very old, weakened, hypothermic, stressed, difficult to dry or whose condition does not allow safe handling.

• Claw clipping, paw pad care or any action that may cause bleeding, pain or injury outside an appropriate framework.
• Use of medicated, antiparasitic, disinfectant or prescribed products without clear veterinary guidance.
• Intervention in case of conflict between owners, neighbours, relatives, property manager or providers around the animal without an appropriate framework.
• Promising a perfect aesthetic result, total disappearance of knots, absence of stress, absence of biting or total safety.
